Edward Burtynsky: Oil.
"In 1997, I had what I refer to as my oil epiphany. It occurred to me that the vast, human-altered landscapes that I pursued and photographed for over twenty year were only made possible by the discovery of oil..." Edward Burtynsky. Edward Burtynsky is a Canadian photography who has travelled the world photographing the effect that the production of oil has on our lives. While shooting obvious sights that involved oil that we are used to seeing everyday (such as the transportation of oil), he also captures the steps that the normal person wouldn't ever get the opportunity to see in there lifetime. This was a key concept that Burtynsky wanted to explore. The exhibition, located in the Photographers gallery on Oxford street, has three sections. These include the extraction and refinement, transportation and motor culture and the end result of oil. While in each section Burtynsky features typical landscape style shots, he also addresses the end of oil and the problems that our environment is facing due to it. Each picture contains an incredible amount of detail, and when blown up to a large scale in the gallery, almost gives the impression that you as the viewer are there experiencing it first hand. |
